This Ones for the Fellas: Men’s Skincare

Posted in Essential Oils, Skin Care Tips, Spa Days | Posted on February 04, 2014

Listen up all you manly men out there, I’m talking to you! I’m tired of hearing from guys that skin care is “a girl thing” or that men don’t need to care for their skin. According to a Huffington post survey in September 2013, 54% of men admitted to not using a single skin care product as they got ready in the morning. Prevention, and treatment is key for beautiful skin no matter what your age or gender is, so get ready for some at home DIY men’s skin care recipes!

Shaving Soap- Ditch the aerosol cans full of synthetic fragrances and chemicals and say hello to smooth and soothed skin.

For dry skin, a thick cream-

  • 1/4 cup olive, almond or coconut oil
  • 2-3 TBSP Shea or Cocoa Butter
  • 1/4 cup Aloe Gel or Honey
  • 1 TBSP Kaolin clay or white cosmetic clay (optional)
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 cup Liquid Castille Soap
  • Vitamin E

Melt your Shea or coco butter in a double broiler until just melted. Remove from the heat and add all other ingredients. Store in an air tight jar for up to 2 months (if mixture becomes separated shake and stir back together”

For normal skin, a shave foam-

  • 1/4 cup Natural Aloe Vera Gel (not juice!)
  • 1/4 cup Liquid Castille Soap
  • 1 TBSP Olive or Almond Oil
  • 1/4 cup warm Distilled Water Vitamin E or Grapefruit Seed Extract (to preserve)
  • Essential Oils for Fragrance (optional)
  • 8 ounce or larger Foaming Soap Bottle

Mix all ingredients in the foaming bottle and shake before each use.
To fight razor burn, steep black tea bag into strong tea. Spray the black tea on the bumps or try using witch hazel to calm the inflammation.

Use a facial exfoliate up to two times a week pre shave to insure a super close cut. WARNING: do not use this scrub on freshly shaved skin, the sea salt will burn!

  • 2 tablespoons ground oatmeal
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon honey

Combine all ingredients and scrub your face in well, avoiding the eye area. Follow up with a moisturizer or your favorite oil to soften your skin.
A couple weeks ago I posted some at home face cream recipes. These can be equally beneficial for both men and woman. For a more “manly” scent try using one of the following essential oils in the recipe

  • Bay Laurel
  • Cypress
  • Bergamot
  • Spruce
  • Frankincense
  • Lime
  • Juniper Berry
  • Myrrh
  • Neroli
  • Sandalwood
  • Sage
  • Orange
  • Thyme
  • Lemon Balm

There you go men; you may still think skincare is girly, but just know a smooth soft face is much appreciated by anyone who’s kissing it! Try out one of these recipes and let us know what you think, or (if you’re really lazy) stop by your local natural food stores and explore their option for natural skin care products.
